Lecture/Fashion Show: National Batik Day
Embassy of Indonesia
Batik is the Indonesian term for the wax-resist dyeing process, or a fabric decorated with this process. These fabrics reached fantastic heights of virtuosity on the Indonesian island of Java in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century after the introduction of machine-made cotton fabrics permitted more finely controlled designs. In celebration of Batik Fashion Week, textile designer Helen Dewi Kirana, founder of fashion brand NES, will discuss the iconic coastal motifs in batik design and Indonesia’s growing efforts to preserve its batik heritage. The program will include an interactive batik styling demonstration and a brief fashion presentation.
A collaboration with the Embassy of Indonesia in conjunction with the National Batik Day Trunk Show. Free, but reservations are required. Register online or call 202-994-7394.
