Washington, DC., (08/27/2020). KIBAR (Kitorang Bicara) or “We talk”, a serial-webinar held by the Indonesian Embassy in Washington D.C., USA through the Attaché for Education and Culture, again presented several great speakers. In this 3rd series, Kibar took the theme of architecture and development.

The first speaker was Prof. Katherine Ankerson, Dean of the Nebraska College of Architecture. Prof. Anderson talked about several points that make Nebraska College of Architecture different from the others including transforming experiences, high discipline, collaborative projects, and professional local firms.

The discussion was continued by the Director of the Architecture Program at the University of Nebraska, Prof. David Carl. Prof. Carl explained several programs on his campus, including a four-year undergraduate program and a two-year master’s program. The University of Nebraska also offers a minor undergraduate program that is an opportunity for students to learn more about territorial planning, product design, and landscape architecture.

Next was the explanation from Prof. Joe Grangs, Chair of Urban Planning at the University of Michigan and the Michigan Arbor. Unlike the two previous speakers, Prof. Joe talked about city planning. He said that the study of urban planning at this time is an important matter given the rapid development. For those interested in pursuing a major in urban planning, the University of Michigan is one of the recommended universities. This can be seen from the university rankings which are in the 9th position in the United States as well as a number of interesting opportunities provided to their students.

Moving on from urban planning, the discussion was continued with the topic of sustainable development systems which was delivered by Prof. David Fannon from Northeastern University. Prof. Fannon introduced Northeastern University as a campus known for its education and research. The campus is claimed to have learning based on research on learning and work so that the graduates are truly educated and competent in implementing a sustainable development system.

The next discussion was delivered by Bahrun Saleh Ismail Baranuri, a student of Public Space Matters at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Mr. Baranuri gave a presentation on the importance of public space in a city. According to him, the public space should have values such as social values, environmental values ​​and economic values. There are three ways that people can visit public spaces, namely by removing boundaries, increasing various facilities, and increasing the function of the space so that visitors are freer to move.

The next speaker was M. Fitrah Pratama Teng who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sustainable Development at Northeastern University. Mr. Teng conveyed his presentation regarding the issue of sustainability development in Ternate City, Indonesia. Based on data on the condition of Ternate City which is often hit by floods, he recommended a sustainability strategy by collecting rainwater on top of the building which, then, flows into the building’s bathroom. Another strategy that can be used is the use of Bioswale or artificial infiltration areas that are built using natural materials.

After that, the presentation was continued by Piere L. Bagenda, master student at the Urban Regional Planning, University of Michigan. Mr. Bagenda talked about city branding. In his presentation, Mr. Bagenda explained briefly the concept of City Branding. He also put forward the idea of ​​elevating Ambon as a city of music.

The discussion was closed with Prof. Ir. Fredrik L. Benu, M.Si., Ph.D. from Nusa Cendana University (UNDANA), NTT. Prof. Benu explained the tips to qualify for higher education abroad and how to get scholarships. Prof. Benu also explained briefly about the collaboration of world universities with UNDANA.
